Question minimums per credit tier (reference)
Initial tier (video alone) Review Q Final Q Total Q
Per NASBA Standards S8-02 and S8-04: 3 review + 5 final per CPE credit, plus 2 review + 3 final for each half-credit. Question counts are determined by the initial tier from video duration alone; the final credit awarded may be higher after the question time is added back into the formula.
About this calculator

Based on the AICPA/NASBA Statement on Standards for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Programs (revised January 2012) and the official NASBA Word Count Formula template.

Word count formula (Method 2, S14-07):

[(words ÷ 180) + audio/video minutes + (questions × 1.85)] ÷ 50 = CPE credits

The result is calculated to three decimal places and then rounded down to the nearest 0.5 per S13-01.

How this calculator works:

1. Determines the initial credit tier from the video duration and word count alone, rounded down to the nearest 0.5.
2. Looks up the minimum questions required for that tier per S8-02 and S8-04.
3. Applies the full NASBA formula including the question time and rounds down to the nearest 0.5.
4. Displays the final credits awarded along with the question counts to write.

This matches the official NASBA template behavior exactly. The final credit count is sometimes a half-credit higher than the initial tier because adding the question time to the formula can push the calculation across a half-credit threshold.

Question minimums for compliance:

• Review questions: 3 per CPE credit, 2 per half-credit (S8-02)
• Final exam: 5 per CPE credit, 3 per half-credit, no true/false (S8-04)
• Final exam passing grade: minimum 70% (S8-04)
